DT at Coates Way

At Coates Way School, DT is taught in line with the national curriculum using an adapted version of Kapow. The content is split into the following strands:
Structure , Cooking and nutrition , Textiles , Mechanisms and Electronics.
The Design and Technology curriculum aims to inspire pupils to become creative, innovative and resourceful problem solvers. Through practical experiences, pupils develop the confidence to design, make and evaluate products while considering the needs of others and the world around them.
Our curriculum provides opportunities for pupils to develop knowledge and skills across a range of areas, including cooking and nutrition, electrical systems, mechanisms, textiles and structures. Pupils learn how to apply their understanding of materials, tools and techniques to create purposeful products, whilst developing resilience, independence and critical thinking skills.
The curriculum is carefully sequenced to build knowledge and skills progressively throughout the school. Pupils are encouraged to investigate existing products, generate and communicate ideas, make and refine their designs, and evaluate their work against specific criteria. Through this process, they learn the importance of creativity, perseverance and continuous improvement.
We use a range of practical resources, tools and materials to provide engaging, hands-on learning experiences. Pupils explore real-world applications of Design and Technology, developing an understanding of how design shapes the world around them and contributes to everyday life.
Our overall aim is for pupils at Coates Way School to leave with the knowledge, skills and confidence to become innovative thinkers who can apply their learning to solve problems, make informed decisions and contribute positively to an ever-changing technological world.

EYFS: DT is delivered flexibly, in line with the EYFS statutory requirements under the Early learning goal of Expressive arts and design. Children explore construction kits, create puppets and junk modelling.
Key Stage 1 and 2: Children have approximately 1 lesson of Art a week for three half terms a year. Each class focuses is on three different topics throughout the year.
