Early Years

Early Years Foundation Stage
At Coates Way Primary School, we believe that the Early Years are a very special and important time in a child’s education. Our Nursery and Reception class provide a nurturing, welcoming and stimulating environment where every child is encouraged to feel safe, valued and ready to learn.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) provides the foundations for children’s future learning and development. We recognise that every child is unique, with their own interests, experiences, strengths and starting points. Our aim is to build on what each child already knows and can do, while providing rich opportunities for them to develop their confidence, independence and curiosity.
We want our children to become enthusiastic, resilient and motivated learners. Through carefully planned experiences, purposeful play and high-quality interactions with adults and other children, we encourage children to explore, investigate, ask questions, solve problems and make sense of the world around them.
Our EYFS curriculum is based on the seven areas of learning and development within the Early Years Foundation Stage framework. We provide a balance of adult-led teaching and child-initiated learning, allowing children to develop important knowledge and skills while following their own interests. We make the most of children’s natural curiosity and use their interests and experiences to inspire and extend their learning.
We place a strong emphasis on communication and language. We encourage children to listen carefully, develop their vocabulary, express their ideas and feelings, share their thoughts and communicate confidently with others. We understand that strong communication skills are fundamental to children’s learning, relationships and wellbeing.
We also recognise that children learn best when they feel happy, secure and understood. Building positive relationships is therefore at the heart of our Early Years provision. We work closely with families, recognising parents and carers as their child’s first and most important educators. By working together, we can develop a strong understanding of each child and provide the support and encouragement they need to thrive.
Throughout Nursery and Reception, we carefully observe children’s learning and development so that we can identify their individual needs, celebrate their achievements and plan meaningful next steps. We provide opportunities for children to develop the skills and knowledge they need to become confident learners and to work towards the Early Learning Goals at the end of Reception.
Above all, we want every child at Coates Way Primary School to have a happy and memorable start to their school journey — developing a love of learning, growing in confidence and independence, and building the strong foundations they need for the years ahead.
