Art at Coates Way

At Coates Way School, Art is taught in line with the national curriculum using an adapted version of Kapow. The content is split into the following strands:
Line, Pattern, Texture, Form, Colour, Shape, Tone and Space.

The Art curriculum aims to inspire pupils to become creative, confident and expressive artists. Through a range of artistic experiences, pupils are encouraged to explore their ideas, develop their imagination and communicate their thoughts, feelings and experiences through visual art.
Our curriculum provides opportunities for pupils to develop knowledge and skills across a variety of areas, including painting, drawing, clay and sculpture, and craft and design. Pupils learn to experiment with different materials, techniques and processes while developing their understanding of colour, texture, form, pattern and composition.
The curriculum is carefully sequenced to build artistic knowledge and skills progressively throughout the school. Pupils are encouraged to observe closely, explore the work of a range of artists, designers and craftspeople, and develop their own creative responses. Through reflection and evaluation, they learn to refine their ideas, take creative risks and develop resilience and confidence in their artistic abilities.
We use a wide range of materials, tools and resources to provide engaging, hands-on learning experiences. Pupils are given opportunities to create both independently and collaboratively, helping them to appreciate different perspectives and celebrate creativity in all its forms.
Our overall aim is for pupils at Coates Way School to leave with a love of art, an appreciation of creativity and culture, and the confidence to express themselves through a variety of artistic mediums. We want pupils to understand how art enriches our lives and communities and to develop the skills and imagination needed to engage creatively with the world around them.

EYFS: Within EYFS, Art is taught in a flexible and creative way, in line with the statutory requirements for Expressive Arts and Design. Children use cards and materials to create collages and use paints and various other mark making tools both inside and outside.
Key Stage 1 and 2: Children have approximately 1 lesson of Art a week for three half terms a year. Each class focuses is on three different topics throughout the year.
